He understands himself as a writer who works in the language of visual art. His work carries a quiet, elegiac quality. He is drawn to how a person lives inside a past they cannot fully grasp, unknowingly bearing its consequences and even, through their own actions, prolonging it, only to discover upon awakening that no original point remains to return to. This asymmetry between a person and the forces that have already shaped them is what gives his work its quiet, unplaceable sense of loss. In method, Yu Yang rarely states, letting meaning surface quietly on the viewer's side. His works often take the form of a loop, because the states they hold can never truly be completed or reconciled.
